Mental Block

So how has the new year started for you and your photography?

For me it’s been a bit slow and I’ve not been entirely happy with what I’ve captured so far. Now I know this feeling is temporary, and I am sure many photographers and artists go through phases like this from time to time. At the end of the day, ts just a matter of regaining your inspiration, and for the immediate future, focus on other aspects of the business until the mojo is back.

Therefore, not only have I been wrapping up the annual business requirements but I have also been researching local art shows that might make good venues for my work. It’s interesting to discover that there are many art shows, several I had never heard of or visited, but it’s also interesting to learn how the costs for participating can vary. Across the board renting space at an organized event for a standard 10x10 tent is not cheap and some events even want commission from all your sales. I get it, everyone has to make there cut but unless your selling big tickets items, or expect to sell a high volume of your work, then it really is a simple financial decision.

On one hand you want to spend the money for the event application fee, and hopefully get accepted and therefore some exposure, but what if you do get in and don’t sell enough to cover your costs? And what about all the costs and effort you have to put in to get to an event and setup, it doesn’t happen by itself, and if you’re a sole proprietor then its all down to you. I certainly have a bigger respect for the small businesses I have seen at local events, it’s a big commitment.

As you know, if you read my last blog of 2023, I set myself a goal in the new year to participate in more art shows and events, and I will. However, at first glance, and as you dig deeper in to the requirements of each event, it can seem a bit daunting. How can I make this work? The task is going to be about selecting the art shows and events where my work might resonate best with the expected audience.

I’m not giving up on my local gallery commitments or events, I’m looking to expand my level of exposure and reach to a wider audience. In addition, I don’t want to feel like I’m getting stale doing the same thing over and over again, I feel as though I need the challenge of exploring new events, meeting new photographers and artists, and continuing to learn about the photography business and want works for me and what doesn’t. It’s a journey.

Well, I feel this blog is a quick dump of how I’m feeling at this very moment, hopefully it will help ease my mental block and allow me to move forward, we shall see.
